If you took the tv show "Dark" and condensed it/dumbed it down a bit into a movie and then put it in an American setting - that's what this movie is.
I think M. Night borrowed a little too heavily from Dark here but to be fair it is solidly executed, probably a better overall execution than most of his movies. A bit slow at the start but the last half is pretty entertaining and the ending is mostly satisfying.
I saw most of the twists coming but if you haven't seen Dark you might be pretty surprised.
Even if you don't love the story here the acting is pretty good. Dylan O'Brien is always great and Lauryn Ambrose is also very convincing. Eric Lange is a very underrated actor and he did well in his supporting role. Whoever did the casting here.. A+

This movie copies Dark hard, but it's still a solid effort
Let's the movie build
Give the movie time to build. Caddo Lake is mesmerizing tale that doesn't fully kick in until the 'back half' of the film. The first hour is slow, and rather dull, but the twists and turns the narrative ends up taking more than makes up for a lot the poor pacing. Dylan O'Brien is strong here, and it's great to see him in again in a leading roll, but the script didn't give him much to pull from. I think a second viewing will be required to fully understand where the story ends up.
Verdict:
Slow first half with an interesting story that ends on a strong note.
I recommend this as an 'easy' movie night.
I was invested
I went into this knowing nothing about this movie, except the genre. I am glad that that was the case! I had no expectations and was able to just let the plot unfold and experience the discovery right along with the protagonists. I really enjoyed it. If it's not too late, I'd recommend not reading the plot summary or any detailed reviews before watching.
It starts out feeling a bit like a family drama but pay attention because sprinkled throughout are little plot supporting elements. You might even reach a point where you'll be wondering just what in the world is going on. Don't worry... it's all explained fairly neatly before it's done. Just hang in there!
