I had hoped this would be better than the worst Hallmark romance movie but it wasn't.. I read the synopsis and being a fan of good romantic comedies like Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral, I decided to watch it. It was actually not that bad up until the truly unrealistic and unbelievable part where Jeff Fahey's character asked the the much younger Ashley on a date.. In real life Mr Fahey is 71 but in the movie he was made out to be born in 1965. This is not believable and I cringed when they kissed after their date. It was like watching a daughter romantically kissing her father! The other romance of Claire and the beach/ boat dude was not believable. The double wedding at the end was a cringe fest. The chick practically having an orgasm over the food was too over the top and most annoying and the food poisoning scene was not funny in the slightest nor was that bride's reaction, yelling and screaming believable.
The star of the movie was the island. I have always wanted to go there so that was the draw for me in deciding to watch the film.
Plot summary
Claire and her pals are invited to the West Indies by their friend Ben, who just inherited an island getaway. To pass the long days, they start a business hosting beachfront weddings, resulting in both awesome success and hilarious disaster. Meanwhile, the sun and scenery put Claire, Ben, and their posse in the mood for romance. Will the next wedding be one of theirs?

Nevis was worth the watch
Off completely!
I have seen some bad films. This is no doubt the worst film I have ever endured. I'm not sure what made me curious about watching this. I have never had an interest in the "star", but continued the grueling process of watching anyway. I wouldn't consider this to be a comedy or even entertainment. I wasn't even mildly entertained. I stuck with it although getting halfway through it was a waste of time. By the time I realized I had wasted the time watching, I could have been doing something, or anything more productive. I would not recommend this film to anyone. Watch anything but this. Condolences to the writer.
But it wasn't a comedy...
I believed that I was in for a comedy when I sat down to watch the 2023 movie "One Year Off", as it was labeled as a comedy. And imagine my surprise when I sat through 100 minutes of no laughs or funny situations.
The storyline in "One Year Off" was not bad, and writer Stewart Thomson did put together something nice enough. However, I was just expecting it to be a comedy, so I had other expectations than what Stewart Thomson actually delivered. And that sort of made it an askewed movie for me to sit through, though I managed to watch the entire movie, but I was only mildly entertained.
The acting performances in "One Year Off" was okay. And I have to say that I mostly sat down to watch the movie because I saw Jeff Fahey was starring in a comedy. There were some other familiar faces on the cast list, such as Antonio Fargas and Chad Michael Collins.
Watchable for what it was, director Philippe Martinez delivered a 'comedy' that failed to tickle my funny bone. But I am sure that there is an audience out there for a movie such as this, because the storyline is okay and the acting is good. I just had my expectations a whole other place than where director Philippe Martinez was going.
My rating of "One Year Off" lands on a four out of ten stars.
